Transverse Velocities of Galaxies From Microlens Parallaxes

چکیده

The transverse velocity of a spiral galaxy can be measured to an accuracy 60 km s 1 by making parallax observations of quasars being microlensed by stars in the disk of the galaxy. To make the measurement, a quasar must be located behind the disk of the galaxy between about 1 and 2 scale lengths from the center. The quasar must then be monitored for microlensing events and the events followed simultaneously from the Earth and a satellite in solar orbit, preferably at 30 AU. A systematic search in a volume within 21; 000 km s 1 could locate quasars with B < 23 behind a total of 1900 galaxies. The rate of lensing events (and hence galaxy velocity measurements) would be 3 yr 1. The events would have typical characteristic times ! 1 3 yr. Under the assumption that the mass spectrum of lensing objects is the same in other spiral galaxies as in our own, the observations could be used to measure the Hubble parameter to an accuracy of 5%.

Microlens Parallaxes of Binary Lenses Measured from a Satellite

Caustic-crossing binary lenses make up about 5% of all detected microlenses. The relative proper motion of a caustic-crossing binary lens can be measured with observations from a single terrestrial telescope. Thus, uniquely, binary lenses can be completely solved with only the addition of a measurement of the microlensing parallax. This solution will yield the mass, distance, and transverse vel...

Microlens Parallaxes with SIRTF

The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) will drift away from the Earth at ∼ 0.1 AU yr. Microlensing events will therefore have different characteristics as seen from the satellite and the Earth. From the difference, it is possible in principle to measure ṽ, the transverse velocity of the lens projected onto the observer plane. Since ṽ has very different values for different populations (d...

Microlens Parallax Measurements With A Warm Spitzer

Because the Spitzer Space Telescope is in an Earth-trailing orbit, losing about 0.1 AU/yr, it is excellently located to perform microlens parallax observations toward the Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC) and the Galactic bulge. These yield the so-called “projected velocity” of the lens, which can distinguish statistically among different populations. A few such measurements toward the LMC/SMC would ...

M31 Transverse Velocity and Local Group Mass from Satellite Velocities

We present several different statistical methods to determine the transverse velocity vector of M31. The underlying assumptions are that the M31 satellites on average follow the motion of M31 through space, and that the galaxies in the outer parts of the Local Group on average follow the motion of the Local Group barycenter through space. We apply the methods to the line-of-sight velocities of ...
